Even when you're poor, food looks like you're about to take a picture of it for a shitty recipe blog where the pictures are gorgeous and artsy but there's like six thousand words of some story about a dead grandmother that nobody cares about because they probably clicked on the link so, y'know. They could get a recipe.

I've rarely had occasion to be outside of Paris, [Not even France, just Paris.] so all the food here is . . . interesting. This, at least, is ingredients I understand.

It's hard to go wrong with potatoes and beef, in my experience.

[They're poor students. They eat a lot of bread, but when they do eat actual food it's usually stuff like this.]

[If he wasn't used to people watching him eat - whether it be because someone finally figured out he'd forgotten to eat or because he's breakfasting with friends - he might find it a bit weird. As it is:]

My compliments to the chef. It might not look the prettiest, but it's certainly delicious.

Looks aren't everything, ya know. But the chef will certainly accept those compliments.

Of course they're not. Nobody would tolerate my presence if that was the case.

But they say you eat with your eye before your stomach.

In time, in country. [He shrugs.] I'm afraid I only really know about the politics and art of other countries, not the culture.

Well, I've a lot of general history knowledge, though the finer points of art and culture elude me, so I suppose we're working on common ground.

Enjolras is always saying it's important to have people with different experiences and different skills talk. It fosters discussion, and those who don't think like you can often . . . fill in the gaps, as it were.

[There's something slightly different in his voice when he speaks about Enjolras, as opposed to any of his other friends: he doesn't sound fond, exactly? It's more of a . . . longing, maybe.]

I...think I would agree. Those who're exactly alike, they can't learn new things from one another. At least, not in the same way. Do you think...we're drawn to those, who're different?
