Exam 3

Exam 3.

[ Once again, the exam begins with the desks arranged in a perfect circle; one desk for each person that's participating in the program. There are nameplates for everyone, and they have been bolted to each of the desks, facing the inside of the circle...

...including the deceased. Their chairs have been placed on top of their desks, signifying that they will not be needed. Above of their desks are holograms of their portraits from their profiles, grayed out and bloodstained.

Today Han is absent-- only Megumi is present at the front of the classroom.
]

Today you are responsible for finding the culprit responsible for the death of Maya Fey, the Apprentice Falsely Accused.

Your exam begins now.

Victim.

Suspects.

[ The physical evidence tray sits in the middle of the circle of desks; you all have the Evidence app on your tablets to access photo evidence. ]

Examination START.

Does that bloodstain really look like they picked up the perfectly good guitar or just brushed their bloody hand against it while they were putting down the other one...

[he's squinting at the photographs on his tablet, biting his lip]

As for the bruise earlier... that proves more than anything the culprit had the guitar from the beginning. There isn't any other large blunt instrument like that, right? It's not another fell on the floor case, is it?

But if they had it from the beginning, it's weird that such an aggressive culprit would take such a long time and distance to catch up with Miss Fey...

Dunno. I didn't find it, I'm just saying you shouldn't disregard evidence just because it doesn't fit your theory.

[ He shrugs. ]

The culprit had the guitar. We didn't find any proof that Maya fell over or anything, she didn't have any other marks on her, besides all the stab wounds and the blood on her hands.

I mean, if a dude comes at you with a guitar, you run. If you seriously think a blind kid could chase somebody that far and still somehow catch up to her, I dunno what to tell you, kid. Running from somebody who can't see ain't that hard. She could've just kept quiet and hid behind a door or something. The chase doesn't make sense if she was being chased by Alex.

[He frowns and makes more marks in his notebook.]

We need to think about the chase much more, it's the most mysterious part of all this... I'd like to know what you think about me including the fire stairs in my diagram... Her room is next to mine, extremely close to the stairs. And there's no evidence of her taking shelter in a room of the dormitory building other than the common room - she certainly didn't get back into her own room - so doesn't it seem like she ran all the way outside?

I'm not describing it that way to push any particular culprit. As for whether the chase exonerates Alex, though... Miss Fey may not have known her attacker was blind so that she could use that strategy. Alex never stated that at the meeting - Amami-kun took notes and remembered others on the suspect list, but not him.

Yeah, no kidding. Look, Maybe Maya didn't know -- I don't think the two of them talked much, but how the fuck would a blind person go down the stairs? It doesn't track.

Like, okay, maybe he bumped into shit. Sure. But stairs?

Well... a hand railing.

[RED ARROW POINTING DOWN NEXT TO HIS HEAD

okay he pulls out his tablet too to point at the maps]

You see that there's just one staircase, in the corner. The elevator is the only other way down - it would have made a dinging noise and been a more enclosed space nobody running would want to go into. Or, well, the balcony, but there's no sign Maya did that. We've had weeks to become familiar with the stairs' location, days under the effect of the motive.

[Poe's been fairly quiet this trial, still reeling from his sense of emotional empathy coming back. Still... he figures it's about time for him to try and contribute again.]

Have.... have we considered that Maya might have been knocked out in the common room... but brought to the kitchen to be killed? In the common room, any one of us could potentially walk at out any moment. The kitchen isn't much better... but it'd be safer to kill her there over the common room.

The bedrooms are soundproof, which explains why none of us noticed this fight in time, but you have a point with one of us coming out... It's true that it's almost too convenient for the chase to stop in the kitchen where there was a sharp weapon that wasn't removed from the kitchen...

At any rate, if the culprit managed to knock her out altogether with the guitar in the common room, having sight to chase her down the stairs isn't a problem at all.

You kids and your kooked up theories.

Sometimes a duck is just a duck, okay?
