WEEK 5
[ You're doing well! In fact, there's a nice message in your inboxes on Sunday reminding you about your midterm evaluations, and how those will be coming very soon. Make sure you're studying! And, of course, there will be support services on campus to help you cope with the stress. The message almost looks like it should go on and list what those services are, but it cuts off abruptly, and that's that.
Meanwhile, the wall is more ominous than it has been in the past. What felt oppressive last week feels oddly eerie, and if you let yourself stay near too long, it feels oddly comforting and calling. Your freedom is just on the other side of the wall, after all. But that's okay, someone has posted a warning outside all buildings to not go near the wall.
Oh well. At least there are new locations to explore!]

Contains implied V3 spoilers!
That strange uniform he got off Akira the other week had become a lot more familiar now, and he's figured he might as well wear that today. First order of buisness is to go tape a handwritten notice on his door for anyone who wasn't at the afterparty last night.]
I'm taking a vow of silence.
Realized that not speaking helps me think. I'll be saving my voice for trials, emergencies, and vocal exercises. Sorry for the inconvenience. - Amami Rantaro
[He's copied the announcement on the front page of the notebook he grabbed yesterday, along with some pre-written responses he thinks he'll end up using a lot. A part of him wonders if the staff intended for one of the "apprentices" to go partially mute, but hey. More power to him.
Later on in the morning, he's chilling in the Starbucks with a barely touched frappichino at his side. He's more focused on that midterm announcement on his tablet. That's pretty sketchy. After a moment he writes something on a blank page and sets his notebook on the table, facing out to anyone who might walk in.]
Does anyone have any theories about the midterm exams?
midterm announcement
Considering that all these... trials are called 'exams'... It could be referring to the next one they plan on us having.
[Trials are the best description for what those exams really are.]
When you take into account that we're supposed to be used to save the world from this... virus. It makes sense that they'd eventually stop giving us motives and trying to get us to kill. So... we might be halfway through this entire ordeal.
[He pauses.]
Or... at least, that's the most optimistic theory I have. Another possibility is that they plan on quizzing us about all the previous 'exams'. Personally though... I think the former theory is more likely.

One good thing about not talking is he has a chance to look over his words before he replies. He's less likely to "say" something he shouldn't that way.
He flips to a blank page for the sake of organization and spends some time writing a response. Hopefully Poe's patient with him...]

I don't know if we can really call it a virus. Starting to think maybe whoever this mysterious higher up is has been feeding the staff half truths and stringing them along. How else do you explain them having the ability to mess with our minds and bodies every week?
Anyway, what if they just do both? There's some kind of disaster motive and someone gets murdered in the same way as the last three victims? IDK.
Woulda been nice to actually know what those "support services" around the campus are.

[Poe would consider asking Han himself... but he's still mildly intimidated by the guy from the frog incident.]
As for the rest... I hope that's not the case. If someone gets murdered in the same way as the last three... that'd imply that they'd somehow be able to make the killer choose those specific methods.
[He's not sure he likes the idea that the murderers might not be making the choice to kill out of their own free will.]
And.. um... it... might require three corpses and three murderers since the circumstances between all three were so... well... different.

After some more writing...]
As far as I know, he seems pretty clueless about most stuff around here. Said he used to have another assistant before this.
He had no clue about the thing we talked about in private two weeks ago. You know what I'm talking about, right?
[As ironic as that sounds, Rantaro's really hoping he doesn't have to write down reminders.]
We'd lose a lot of people in one fell swoop if they did that. If they want any survivors, they'd have to avoid that route.
no subject
[As for that thing... Poe nods.]
I remember it.... and it's interesting that he didn't know about that. It... might be something he's not high up enough to know about.
[Poe pauses as an idea occurs to him.]
.... I could try asking T-... Oswald about 'it' if you want. He is clearly far higher in the hierarchy than Han is.
[Poe hasn't done anything to make Oswald specifically mad yet... so he might be a good bet for who should ask Oswald if Rantaro doesn't want to interact with the man.]
So it's likely going to just be another 'exam' then.

someone else
And good luck getting a hold of the guy. If you feel like trying to track Ozzy down, be my guest.
[Behold. A compromise.]
Most likely. Unless they throw a wrench in the works involving that virus and/or the wall.
no subject
[He'll do his best.]
.... The 'mid-term' will be our fourth case then.
[And that means...]
If that's the mid point of this whole ordeal... than that means we have three or four more 'exams' total.
[He's not sure if he should count the mid term as it's own divider... but whatever.]
So... provided no one does anything reckless and no one claims more than one victim... We're going to likely loose six or eight more people.
[So far Poe hasn't lost anyone he's heavily bonded to... besides Viral and maybe Henry. He... doesn't like the odds of that pattern remaining.]
1/3
Rantaro hasn't lost many people he bonded with... Just Maya. But he doesn't like that anyone had to die for this insanity...
As for the odds...]
2/3
Doing some quick equations in the margins of his notebook... 7 + 6... 26-13...]
3/3
He writes out something before showing his work to Poe.]
That means we'll only have half the group surviving this at most.

[He also does not like those numbers.]
It's... clearly what they planned though. Those of us who resisted temptation and were smart enough or lucky enough to avoid death... that is who they want.

[Is there an end to this where they could win in some way?]

He settles down in his chair, trying to think... A far fetched idea comes to mind. Might as well give it a shot.]
You think we might be able to get the staff here to fight on our side?
no subject
[... but how?]
no subject
Yeah, those two seem to be our best bet. Especially Han, since he's been here the longest. You might want to warm him up a bit. I know he likes the coffee here.
no subject
[Or at least that's what he's been calling it in his head.]
Besides... I'm ah.... not the person you should look to for getting people to rebel.
[He's only got a way with words in text.]
Besides... that seems far more suited to Akira-san.
