WEEK 5

[ You're doing well! In fact, there's a nice message in your inboxes on Sunday reminding you about your midterm evaluations, and how those will be coming very soon. Make sure you're studying! And, of course, there will be support services on campus to help you cope with the stress. The message almost looks like it should go on and list what those services are, but it cuts off abruptly, and that's that.

Meanwhile, the wall is more ominous than it has been in the past. What felt oppressive last week feels oddly eerie, and if you let yourself stay near too long, it feels oddly comforting and calling. Your freedom is just on the other side of the wall, after all. But that's okay, someone has posted a warning outside all buildings to not go near the wall.

Oh well. At least there are new locations to explore!]

[... He simply nods, even though he doesn't look very convinced.]

[ It's pretty clear Hank won't hear anything otherwise. ]

Not to mention, it'd take a fucking lot to kill Connor. He ain't human, so unless he bleeds out, he can pretty much run no matter what.
whatsmytalentagain: (What's never shown)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-10 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
[... That's kinda spooky.]

Robots have blood?
donotlick: (vlEacZn)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-10 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure they do.

[ Obviously! ]

I mean, androids from back home do, anyway. It's uh, blue blood. [ he pauses... ] "Thirium" is the technical term for it. It's the stuff that powers their biocomponents.
whatsmytalentagain: (What you want me to be)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-10 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmn...

I think that might be exclusive to your home. Never heard of it.
donotlick: (g7UMbtg)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-10 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he shrugs. ]

I mean, yeah. Obviously. You guys don't even have androids yet, much less CyberLife.
whatsmytalentagain: (You're the closest to heaven)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-10 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[... The smirk's back. He takes a little longer to reply. Had to turn the page and draw something for this one.]

Actually, I did recently remember meeting something like an android myself.

[Below that sentence is a quick sketch of someone who is very obviously a robot. Not the most accurate depection in the world, but pretty damn close. There's an arrow connecting this dude with the next chunk of handwriting.]

This is K1-B0 (kee-bou) Sentient, probably first of his kind thanks to being a scientist's "son", very passionate about calling out "robophobic behavior."

[And below the sketch...] I don't know if I got to talk to him much, but he seemed okay. Don't think he runs on cyber life blood like your robots do.

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-10 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Guess you're not as behind as I thought.

[ props to your world, buddy. ]

Yeah, CyberLife is the company that makes androids back home. They're a pretty common commodity since they've been around for more than ten years. Plus I'm from Detroit, which is where they started making 'em, so I've had to get pretty used to listening to the whole spiel. Used to not be a big fan of 'em, basically.

But anyway, guess you learned something new. I think Kamski was more into making 'em human, cause they didn't get mass-produced till one of 'em passed the Turing Test. But I wouldn't really know, they're not really my field.
whatsmytalentagain: (And what do you think you'd understand)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-10 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[You can thank Prof. Idabashi for that. Whoever that guy is.

The turing test... Well, he's heard of the term, but he's not entirely sure what it could mean... And the name...]

1. The turing test is about robot sentience, right?

2. Did we talk about this Kamski guy before? Might need to refresh my memory here.
donotlick: (LvmrbZL)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-10 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Something like that. I think it's supposed to be the thing where you can't tell humans apart from machines.

[ he shrugs. ]

I'm not really an expert, but you and I haven't really talked much since we got here, so you don't gotta play coy with me, kid. Kamski's the name of the guy who invented androids. Elijah Kamski -- man of the century and richer than God.
whatsmytalentagain: ('Cause I don't think that)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-11 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs. Hey, being coy is part of his apperent charm. He can't help it. Kamski, though...]

You're right, but if I remember correctly you said the rich types could afford to get away with more... You know. Am I jumping to conclusions here?

donotlick: (kqJukce)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-11 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. That's the kinda person who can do whatever they want, basically.

Though Kamski went into seclusion ten years ago. Who knows where the fuck he's at nowadays.
whatsmytalentagain: (Not an answer to be heard)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-11 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
... [His smile falls once more... Yikes. He doesn't know if it's sympathy from growing up in a wealthy family or something else, but he's concerned.]

Did something happen right before he vanished?
donotlick: (ChrDi4B)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-11 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
He was fired/maybe quit his very lucrative position as CyberLife's CEO. The papers say he stepped down, but the ten years' seclusion thing kinda points to him being fired and storming off in a huff.

[ He shrugs. ]

Who knows, though?
whatsmytalentagain: (I just don't wanna miss you tonight)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-11 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[... Yeesh.]

He must have done something pretty bad. Or controversial. Those two things aren't the same, but they still cause trouble.

[Rantaro ain't related to the former CyberLife CEO, but he's not happy imagining his own dad losing his job like that, but not how the rest of his family would be able to cope with the loss after a few years. Sure, Rantaro himself is old enough and experienced enough to settle in a foreign country and make it on his own, but what about the others?

Probably shouldn't admit that to Mr. I-Hate-The-1% here, but...]

donotlick: (yep there's the paid)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-11 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Controversial is more like it.

[ Hank's going out on a limb here, but.... ]

He probably made it so androids could have free will.
whatsmytalentagain: (And what do you think you'd understand)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-11 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[That snaps him out of those thoughts. He didn't think twice about androids having free will, but then again most of the robots he's met so far had some kind of free will.]

Is this related to the robots passing the turing test?
donotlick: (jvbE2BA)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-12 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. The Turing test was just what made people want to buy 'em.

The free will thing started up recently, but it's pretty much coded into every android. This ain't some glitch, much as CyberLife might wanna paint it like one.
whatsmytalentagain: (And I'm not afraid)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-12 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Rantaro's raising his eyebrow here.]

And folks just found out recently?
donotlick: (bqCwckZ)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-12 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
They're starting to, at least as far as I can remember.

[ Good ol' android revolution ]
whatsmytalentagain: (And you can't fight the tears)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-12 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
So they might have learned it from us.

Who do you think we have to blame for that?
donotlick: (NTdvsL3)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-12 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Kid, you're misunderstanding me. They didn't learn it from anybody. I'm saying Kamski wanted to make androids capable of sentience. We call it "deviancy" back home.

CyberLife's been trying to keep the deviancy thing on the down-low for years. It's only recently that one of the deviants made a big statement on TV, so they can't just keep sweeping it under the rug.
whatsmytalentagain: (They'd understand)

[personal profile] whatsmytalentagain 2018-09-12 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...

[Well...]

I've personally haven't met an android that didn't have free will of some sort. That includes K1-B0. So I can't really argue against it.

Just wondering why this Kamski guy would want to make a bunch of sentient robots and market them as dumb products. Seems kind of backwards to me.
donotlick: (LvmrbZL)

[personal profile] donotlick 2018-09-16 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
You ain't seen what it's like back home, then. They were made to serve people, not replace them.

Kamski's a fucking nut, far as I can tell. I haven't remembered him, but from what Connor told me, he thinks he's some god, so of course he wants his own creations turning into people.
