Midterm Exam.

[ Once again, the exam begins with the desks arranged in a perfect circle; one desk for each person that's participating in the program. There are nameplates for everyone, and they have been bolted to each of the desks, facing the inside of the circle...

...including the deceased. Their chairs have been placed on top of their desks, signifying that they will not be needed. Above of their desks are holograms of their portraits from their profiles, grayed out and bloodstained.

Today Han and Vivienne both are at the front of the classroom, but it's Vivienne that finally speaks up. ]

Today is your Midterm exam. Having successfully passed the halfway mark for the semester, today's proceedings will be a little bit different.

You are responsible for finding the culprits responsible for the deaths of Doris and Hank Anderson. You will have several hours to discuss the evidence and your decision. Know that there are two people among these here that bear the responsibility for these events. You will be asked to vote for each. The two with the highest number of votes will receive their punishment.

There's a blank spot. Whatever happened to Hank-san happened while Mike-san was unconscious... but it doesn't sound like she did.

That's what we need to figure out.

I... I think that they’re holding Mike accountable for Doris’ actions.... and counting whoever killed Doris as another culprit.

Going on what they said, Mike is accountable because he knows who the killer is and is protecting them. If Doris had lived, she'd probably be in the same position now.

Just to be sure-- [ He glances over at Han and Vivi. ]-- the person who ran over Doris, moved the cart into the shed from where Mike-san left it and pushed Hank-san, are they the same person?

Cheater. [She laughs.]

No those things were not all done by one person.

If you're going the wrong direction, taking a step back isn't a bad thing. Just take a deep breath and re-evaluate so you can start moving forward again.

Scrap what we had and rebuild from the ground up. You don't ask much, Vivi-chan.

What if...someone killed Doris in revenge? After all, if she's the one that somehow killed Hank then...what if they killed her in retaliation?

It would be just like Henry showing Oswald Grantaire's head! It's not unprecedented!

You mean like if, for example, Doris was the one who pushed Hank-san to the window and someone saw that and decided to get revenge?

If we went by that logic, we'd go back to either Rebecca-sensei or Connor-san as high suspects in that case...

I can assure you, if I saw a hat push anyone out a window, I wouldn't run it over. I'd think I was losing my mind.

Well, you wouldn't have seen the hat from the outside-- just Hank falling. But after finding androids, magic, and beastmen, would you really draw the line at 'murderous hat'?

Sure they are. And running over a hat isn't...as hard as killing Hank. If you think about it, it's possible that they then hid the body so...we wouldn't have to find it. [ a small shrug ] Like out of protection.

That... would make sense. If Mike-san wasn't in the cart, then someone else killed her...

She played a part in having his death, but we can't actually pin down her entire role, huh. We're not voting for her, so she can't have done it directly... I think?
